BAM-205, Hepatitis
BAM-205 is a proprietary form of a peptide that is found in all cells of the human body. This peptide naturally exists in cells in two forms, oxidized and reduced. Novelos' proprietary formulation of BAM-205 stabilizes the peptide in its oxidized form, which is required for therapeutic action. However, BAM-205 is stabilized differently than BAM-002 and is a separate chemical entity from BAM-002. Novelos' technology permits the large-scale production of BAM-205.
BAM-205 is indicated for acute and chronic hepatitis (B & C), potentially fatal diseases of the liver for which there are few therapies available. Hepatitis B affects 400 million people worldwide1, whereas hepatitis C affects 170 million people worldwide2. BAM-205 was approved for use in Russia in 2001. Preclinical studies support BAM-205's anti-viral and hepatoprotective effects. Clinical studies in more than 250 Russian hepatitis patients have demonstrated BAM-205 safe and efficacious. Efficacy in patients is evidenced by improved liver function and clinical indices, and reduction in viral load. Overall, more than 700 Russian hepatitis patients have been treated successfully with BAM-205.
Commercialization of BAM-205 is underway in Russia. Novelos is preparing a US IND for BAM-205. Novelos also plans to develop and commercialize BAM-205 in China, where there are 200 million people infected with hepatitis.
